On Another Note: Ms. Constance Speaks

16 Dec

One way to get out of my own head space is to think about other people and service, right?  i had asked Ms. Constance to share something about “earning leather,” which she kindly did.  Then i got caught up in my own angst.  At last, here’s that piece from her.

Thank you, Ms. Constance, for sharing your wisdom.

Earning Leather

Whenever there’s a Leather presentation, or there’s a discussion about earning Leather, I always have people who come to me and ask about earning Leather themselves. I believe they are sincere in their interests, but it’s a hard question to answer, and even harder because part of the answer is that earning Leather isn’t for everyone. Earning Leather is, I think, a little like falling in love, in that one rarely sets out to do that. It’s more a case of recognizing at some point that it has happened, often without intention. Earning Leather isn’t so much a destination as a mile marker on the path.

Not everyone would agree with my views about earning Leather, just as they wouldn’t agree with my views on Mastery or slavery or, for that matter, the best chocolate chip cookie. Some people will tell you that this isn’t the one true way, and I wouldn’t disagree. I will say it is my way, and the way of many of the people I know and admire, and that the reasons behind it make sense to me. So, now that I’ve given you the requisite warning, reminded you that your mileage may vary, etc., off we go.

The Leather community is a relatively small one, one that intersects with both the gay male community and the BDSM community. Traditionally, it was made up mostly of gay men, but over the last decade or so, it’s opened up a bit more. Being a woman in the Leather community is still not always easy and one is not always welcome in every venue.

Most people who consider themselves to be a Leather person would tell you that they believe strongly in certain tenets and modes of behavior, with some of those being honesty, respect, integrity and service. For me, it is important to be honest, both with myself and others.  I believe I owe respect to others regardless of their orientation until they demonstrate that they don’t deserve it.  I expect of myself that I will do what I say I will do, because I said I would.

Finally, I believe that I owe service to my community, both the Leather and greater community. Those things matter to me. That’s not to say that non-Leather people do not hold those qualities dear, but they are, for lack of a better word, our founding principles.

Within the Leather community there has long been a tradition of “earning” the Leather we wear. That’s not to say that one can’t ever wear a piece of Leather that wasn’t earned, but that earned Leather has a particular meaning within the community, that it signifies something to the person who wears it, and the people who recognize the meaning behind it.

Leather isn’t earned in a day or a week or even a year, normally. Earning Leather is more like earning a degree in that there are some ways to fast track it – putting in more time and doing more – but that has limits. No matter how hard you work, you cannot earn a Bachelor’s Degree from a reputable institution in six months, and if someone tells you they have, you are likely to wonder about the validity of the institution or the truthfulness of the speaker.

In the code to which I ascribe, one may not give earned Leather to another unless they themselves have earned it. In that tradition, too, only a person who has earned three pieces of Leather may give a piece of earned Leather themselves. Having earned three pieces is rather like being vested in your retirement – at that point, you have earned all rights and privileges. Giving a piece of Leather to someone is also a form of vouching for them, of saying, I believe this person lives up to the standards I hold for myself.

When I give a piece of earned Leather, it means the person to whom I am giving it has met some basic qualifications in my view. For one, I have known them at least three years. I have never given Leather to anyone I had known less than that time frame. Knowing someone for that long gives me a fair amount of experience to draw on, to ensure that they are someone for whom I am comfortable vouching. They must be someone who I feel possesses the same qualities I consider important – honesty and integrity – and, most importantly, they must be serving their community.

There are a lot of different ways to serve. Sometimes people serve in formal roles, as leaders of groups, or producers of events or contests. Sometimes it is less formal, they are people who always seem to volunteer. They’re the ones who are setting up and breaking down play furniture, providing security or registration help.

Having organized many events over time, I can tell you that another form of service is being participatory. Who shows up regularly? Who can you count on to be at a given event, even without checking with them. That doesn’t mean that a person has to attend everything in order to “qualify,” but they do have to be involved in their community. Someone who shows up once or twice a year, no matter how sincere or helpful they may be, simply doesn’t have the commitment that I consider a cornerstone. It doesn’t mean they’re bad people or lazy or uninterested, but for me it requires a continuing commitment.

I also do not make the decision to give a piece of Leather in a vacuum. I speak to others in the community whose opinion and experience I value. I ask other people to participate in a presentation of earned Leather, because I think that it’s important others have the same sense that I do of the person and because it means something to the person who is receiving Leather, too. Those who speak need not have earned Leather themselves, need not even consider themselves part of the Leather community. They are people who have experience with the person who is being presented with Leather, experience that confirms they have the values that I have seen in them.

Another element I like to add to a presentation is the passing around of the Leather I am about to give. I do it for two reasons, one of them being that I believe serving the community is an essential component, the community should be able to see and touch that which is being given. It also gives me a chance to remind people not to touch another’s Leather without permission.

In my mind, earning Leather is kind of a prospective thing, too. I give Leather in the belief that the person who has earned it will continue to do so. It is expected that the person who has earned Leather will not only hold to the principles I ascribe to, but also continue to serve, until age or illness makes it unreasonable to expect that. It is not a community that believes in resting on one’s laurels. One continues to earn one’s Leathers so long as one is able to do so. In the rare instance when someone chooses to leave the community, when they plan not to be involved further, the earned Leather should go back to the person that presented it.

For me, the Leather community has been the place in which I have felt the most at home and accepted. I have earned my place here, and earning it matters to me. I don’t quite trust that which is handed to me. I am far more comfortable with the feeling of accomplishment, and the belief that the things which I wear, which have meaning to me, signify something to others, too, and are a visible representation of the work I have done.

Last Night’s Munch

4 Dec

Last night’s munch was memorable because Ms. Constance led the ceremony of presenting leathers to two community members who had earned it by their service in the community.

This is the third ceremony like this i’ve been to, and each time i think i’m going to write about what it was like.  Each time, i realize that i can’t do it justice.

The leather community is a part of BDSM ~~ and even writing that is not the right beginning.

Never mind.  i think i’ll go ask Ms. Constance to do a guest blog for me on the history and significance of the leather community.

******************************

Ok, e-mailed her and hopefully she’ll agree to do it.

In the meantime, i can tell you that one of the people who earned her leather was l j, who i know from the SIG groups.  {The Special Interest Groups that i go to monthly.}  She leads the submissives’ discussion.

Ms. Constance talked about her first ~  how caring she is, how in touch with people in the community and sensitive to what’s going on with them, how willing to help anytime there’s a need.

Then c-s, another submissive woman, talked about her.  She described how much l j helped her as a newcomer to the community, told stories about how l j had eased her path and kept her connected and progressing in the lifestyle.

It was beautiful and moving.  And wonderful to watch l j accept her piece of leather ~  an amazing leather garter belt.  i didn’t see it unfolded up close, but i think it looked like this:

How cool is that?

And i’m glad i know l j.  i’ve watched her reach out to people, to new submissives, and welcome them to the community.  She has a warm and nurturing way of doing it, sort of like a den mother!  Very cool.

And i’m glad i got to witness the ceremony.  It’s both solemn and joyful.

The second person to earn his leathers in the presentation last night was k, someone i only know by sight and reputation ~ and because i run into him sometimes at the coffee place i go to.  He is the kind of person who makes you feel good just by smiling at you.
He wasn’t there, unfortunately, but i’m glad i got to hear more about him.   Ms. Tammy told a wonderful story about him, and how he had rescued her in a time of need with generosity of time, money, and spirit.

One of the things i love about BDSM is the range of interests and activities and orientations it accommodates.  The “leather” element is about service and community, so of course i’m drawn to that.

The leather aspect moves the community beyond pure kink, into a deeper arena.  This is where i find some of the spiritual aspect of BDSM.

i was reading over at Jake’s blog, who i like and enjoy very much.  He was talking about BDSM and sex, or BDSM without sex.  But there was so much he was saying that seemed {to me} to take different aspects of kink and mix them together like hash.

i’m not meaning to be critical of what he was saying in any way, just that it made me want to separate out the different strands of it all.

When Sir D was doing suspension bondage with me, it wasn’t a sexual experience, in the sense of genital sex.  i write about it here, if you want to see what i mean.

It was sensual, it was kinky, and it was an amazing experience.  But there was no orgasm involved ~ it wasn’t about that.  That doesn’t mean there wasn’t sex later.  And “later” was enhanced because he had “made me fly.”

Because ultimately, whatever our kink means to us, it ends up being expressed in our own intimate relationships.

Last night, i came home with my Sir, and pleased Him in some of the ways i know He likes. And {smiling} was pleased as well.  i think our pleasure was deeper, our relationship richer, because we had experienced a different aspect of BDSM at the munch.

And always, i’m grateful for that.

Monday, Monday…

28 Nov

It’s raining – again – still.  Better than snow, but good grief, it feels like it’s been grey forever.

This is going to be a potpourri of thoughts and ideas.

i went to the Fourth Sunday munch last night, which was fun, but i had two cups of coffee.  That gave me lots of late night energy, not that i got anything constructive done, but i was up late.

Didn’t sleep well.  Didn’t want to get up.  Don’t want to exercise.  Don’t want to go to work.

Sigh.

But i had a good time at the Munch last  night.  Sat with Ms. Constance and Drew, and enjoyed talking to them.   Drank coffee and had a spinach salad.

Ms. Constance is talking about starting a blog, which would be very cool.  i hope she does!

i talked to Mr. Michael some too.  He runs the munch these days, which is a challenging task, i imagine.  He and i are Facebook friends now and he posts links to many articles connected to kink and BDSM.  Interesting stuff.

Here’s one that links to an article Midori wrote on “What Every Submissive Needs to Know Before They Play.”

http://www.edenfantasys.com/sexis/sex/what-every-submissive-should-know-1121111/

It’s interesting, and well done, and i wonder if it would have been better if i’d read something similar back in my early days of kink.  On the other hand, a certain amount of wandering directionless is actually ok with me.  And fortunately, i was just old and mature enough that i didn’t make any irremediable mistakes.

Well, not yet anyhow.

“The truth is, everyone is going to hurt you. You just got to find the ones worth suffering for.”
~~ Bob Marley

Hmmm.  Am i just a wee bit sub-drop-y here?  Or maybe it’s just Monday morning blues after a long weekend.

Besides, now that i think about it, i did read articles like that.  i just didn’t quite know how to process the information.  Or maybe i did… Whatever.

i read an interesting blog post here  by acquiexence on burnout with the world of kink.  i can certainly understand how she feels, although i don’t think i’ve gotten too lost in it all.  But “too lost” is awfully subjective.

i think that when i’m interested in something, i tend to get lost in it.  Wallow in it.  Wander aimlessly.  Almost get swallowed up.

Then i pull back.  Try to assimilate the things i’ve learned.  Reclaim who i am, separate my self back out.  It’s a process.  Maybe that’s the same process acquiexence is going through.

There’s a book called Go to the Widowmaker by James Jones that i read when i was in college.  That book helped me learn to recognize that process in myself, which has been helpful over the years.

Which is not to say it’s comfortable when i’m in the middle of it.  Or even that i remember it’s a process.

And, i think this is a very rambling, unfocused post, and i should stop now before it gets any worse.

Maybe definitely some sub-drop here.  Damn, i hate that.

Ok.  i’ll be better tomorrow.  Probably.  If not tomorrow, the next day.

If not the next day, someday.

Right?

Laughing…  i know, i know.  i need to remember:

Finding the Center

19 Nov

There was some talk on a thread on fetlife today about “damaged people” and it bothered me.  They seemed to think that people who’d been abused were “damaged” and that baffled me.

i think either we’re all damaged, or none of us are.   People who live their lives in privileged seclusion, untouched by overt trauma, are “damaged” in a different way, maybe, but i won’t make judgements on whether that’s more damaged or less.

i’ve been thinking about community today.  How lucky i am to be part of so many circles of support.

i had lunch with Ms. Constance yesterday, and was reflecting on how much i appreciate her linking me to the BDSM community here.  Well, and Sir D for doing it initially.

But Ms. Constance is helping me establish my own roots in the community, which is a different thing.

The VBA awards ~ thinking about how they create circles that overlap, and expand, pulling more bloggers into the flow.

My circles of womenfolk – my family, the subsisters, some of my friends…  Larger circles ~ my people at work, my volunteer friends, my church people… wave after wave, some of them overlapping….

When i think about that, i feel a sense of calm.  My mind grows still.  i breathe deeper.

If i hold my arms out, palms up, they tingle, as if the energy is flowing into me.

Sometimes i get frazzled and overwhelmed.  More often than is comfortable, or helpful.  When i do, it may take me a bit to remember to come back to this place, this internal state.

And sometimes, it feels like i can’t get here.  Like i forget this inner calm even exists, i’m caught in that frantic world of never quite good enough, rushing around trying to get it right.

Sometimes, my Sir helps me find this space again.  It is as if He takes me out of myself, only to slip me back in place, back where i belong.

Sometimes, i get there myself.

When my Sir gets me here, i feel very close to Him, grateful, of course, and connected.

When i get here myself, i long to connect to Him.  It is as if my spirit is searching for Him, looking to complete this most intimate circle from Him to me and me to Him.

It’s a different kind of submission, i think, when i am in this space.  What i bring to the connection is different, maybe?

This is new territory for me ~ i don’t think i’ve shared myself quite this way before.  It will be interesting to see how that works.

My thoughts circle back around to “damaged” people.  i’m damaged, of course, if we’re going to think of people that way.  i have all kinds of scars and dents, emotional places that have been stepped on, kicked, and broken.

My goal, i think, has been to heal so that i’m “stronger in the broken places.”  There is a different kind of beauty and power in that ~ i know because i’ve seen how it works in other people.

i’ll see my Sir tonight.  i’m lucky that way too, that i get to touch Him, and be touched.

i think we bless each other with TTWD.

Blog Smorgasbord

6 Nov

As we’ve been talking about love, i’ve been thinking about the idea that we grow to love people by behaving lovingly towards them.  One of the mixed blessings of my first marriage is that it gave me lots of opportunity to learn this.

i would sometimes be so hurt and angry at my husband that i didn’t think i could stand it, i just wanted out, i felt like i hated him.  i’d weigh out my options, and each time, for many years, i’d end up sighing and staying.

But i wouldn’t stay and be miserable, and i couldn’t be happy and hate him at the same time.   So i’d make myself behave with love.

This was not what i felt like doing.  But it was the right thing to do.

Amazingly, in just a short time, my feelings would shift to align with my behavior.  As i did loving things for him, my heart would crack open, i’d be able to focus on the things that were positive about him, and eventually love would be in the room again.

For me, it was simply that i was not going to be an unloving person, or live in a household without love.

In graduate school, i learned about cognitive dissonance.  i think that’s part of the psychological explanation for how that worked.

So i’ve been thinking about that as i write about love.  Then i stumbled across this link on Facebook:

http://youarenotsosmart.com/2011/10/05/the-benjamin-franklin-effect/

The article says ~ in part ~

The Misconception: You do nice things for the people you like and bad things to the people you hate.

The Truth: You grow to like people for whom you do nice things and hate people you harm.

It’s a pretty cool article, and supports the idea that actions can drive our feelings.   Maybe we are what we do,

In any case, i thought i’d throw the link into the mix for your consideration.

On a different note, i really enjoyed the comments on the video “Cunt.”  It was nice hearing from some people i didn’t know before or don’t usually hear from too.

If you enjoyed the video, you will probably also like this blog post.  {Also coming to you compliments of Donna…  thanks, Donna!}  The comments are particularly fun.

And last night, Sir X and i went to the munch.  He came over early so i didn’t miss getting my maintenance spanking.  In fact, my ass was still pink and a little stingy, a pleasant reminder of my time bent over the arm of the couch.

He brought me the new collar He made for me.  Here it is:

It’s very simple, just a few strands knotted at intervals.  i love it.  He says He may do it in a color too.  i’m hoping for purple.

The munch was fun.  Great food, more room to get up and socialize than there has been at some other venues.  We both enjoyed it.

Of course, Ms. Constance and Drew were there.  Ms. Constance was beautiful in a multi-colored silky top with full, flowing sleeves, and a skirt with fringe around the bottom.  She was wearing a lovely necklace that Drew, had brought her from his trip to Alaska.

She’s spearheading our local “I *HEART* it in The Can” drive, collecting canned goods and pet supplies.   Of course, she was getting an overwhelming response.

My friend from England, H, was there, and it was fun talking to her.  BTW, she says i’m still glowing.  Just for the record, in case you were wondering.  Apparently it hasn’t worn off at all.

There were a couple of raffles  too.  One of them was to raise money for the regional title holders of Master/slave, so they can go to the international level of the contest.

i wasn’t going to buy one, but then i felt bad for not supporting jackie and Sir Charles, especially when jackie was selling the tickets.  i never win anything, but that’s no reason not to make a donation, right?

AND ~ guess what!!!

YES~~

i won!!

The prize was a set of the Anne Rice trilogy “Sleeping Beauty,” which i haven’t read, and a flogger.

We left right after the drawing ~ with me blushing, as Sir X slapped the flogger against His hand, and H laughingly chanted, “O, you’re in so much trouble!  You’re gonna be in so much trouble when you get home…”

But the flogger will have to wait for another day, because when we got home there was a time of tenderness and gentle caresses.  i will draw the veil of privacy here.

A Moment

8 Oct

Last night, at the munch, there is a moment when i look around the room and realize i am perfectly happy.

‘Nilla is on one side of me, Sir X on the other.  ‘Nilla is deep in conversation with Ms. Constance on the other side of her, and her laughter rings out above the horrendous noise level in the room.

Sir X is laughing too, at something Drew is saying on the other side of Him.  He ~ Sir X, not Drew ~ has His hand on my thigh, and my hand is on His knee.

Across from me are F and T, two of my favorite people, who have just gotten through explaining how the decision making process works when both people in the household are switches.

And when i put my hand to my throat, i can feel the collar Sir X has brought with Him for me to wear tonight.   Just for tonight ~ it will leave with Him when we get back home.

Here is what it looks like:

The last time i wore that collar, He’d put a padlock on the rings.  Tonight, he knots the cord to hold it in place, as secure a fastening in its way as the padlock.

And at that moment, at the munch, when i look around the room, i am perfectly happy.

Purring…

2 Oct

Having been stroked

         and petted

                  and caressed beyond pleasure

i fell asleep purring…

And slept way too long.

***********************

Wednesday, ‘Nilla will be here.  i’ m so excited, i can hardly stand it.  i’m beginning to build some structure to our time.

Thursday afternoon, lunch with Ms. Constance.

Thursday evening, dinner with Donna and Bill, who’ll be coming in after a business meeting on Wednesday with their employers and the rest of the staff over at Under Contract to My Wife.

Friday morning, breakfast with Donna and Bill.

Friday night, the munch with me and Sir X and 50 or so other kinksters (still wishing we could talk Donna and Bill into staying for it!)

So much to look forward to ~ but for now, i need to take my still tingling body and start my day.

Show and Tell

6 Sep

So we meet at 2:30, Sir X and i.  Go to Starbucks for coffee and to start the Show and Tell.  {Noooo, not that kind of show and tell.}

His show and tell is a picture on His phone ~ of a shoe horn.  A long-handled shoe horn.

The “tell” goes like this:

He has a coffee table, and was thinking you could tie someone to it.  That it would serve well as a spanking bench.

Then He realizes the angle would be wrong if He were using a belt.  The height, the way the person would be tied, it just wouldn’t work.

Then He sees the shoe horn.  He realizes that if He used that, the angle wouldn’t be a problem.

Of course, it is a mean looking shoe horn, something like this:

Yikes.

He has also brought a bag of toys, but we don’t look at those in Starbucks; that comes later.

So i had actually brought a card with an Anais Nin quote on it ~ the one that goes:

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”  ~ Anais Nin

because i think of that as part vanilla and part kink.  We talk about what it means to me.  He likes it.

But then it occurs to me that i actually have something else to show Him.  {Ok, quit laughing, i know, there are lots of other things i could have shown Him, that’s not what i mean.}

No, on Sunday, when i was practicing with the small gift He’d given me, for some reason {don’t ask me why, i don’t know} i’d taken a picture of my nipple with the little rope wheel-person around it.  i think i’d had some thought of using it on here, but discarded that idea.

Anyhow, sitting there in Starbucks, it occurs to me that the nipple shot might make a nice show and tell.  So a little shyly, i pull my phone out.

“And then there’s this,” i say.

As i’d hoped, He seems pleased with it.

And then, coffee in hand, we embark on a series of adventures.  i won’t detail them all ~ but the theme for the day is “doing private things in public places.”

Just a few minutes of one thing, then on to the next.  “Like a sampler plate,” He says.

i giggle.

There was a park picnic table and His toy bag.   Ropes and cuffs and collars and such…  very nice.

There was a public building and the multi-sex bathroom on the second floor.  The kind that doesn’t have stalls, but just one big room.    Private enough for a few minutes of kinky exploration.

But then He opens the door to “make sure it’s clear,” ~~

~~ and leads me out right past some man waiting to get in.

i’m too embarrassed ~ and we’re moving too fast ~ to see the man’s face, i can only imagine.  But i giggle all the way back to the car.

There are a couple of more stops before dinner, including a cemetery, and some tasks for me, but i’ll leave that to your imagination for now.

Dinner with Ms. Constance and Drew, J, and Tammy was lots of fun, and if i consider how much Domly energy there was at the table, it’s a wonder that Drew and i weren’t crushed.

{laughing…}

Except really they aren’t like that at all, well, not last night anyhow, and Sir X and i both had a good time.

And yes, we’re seeing each other again.  Thursday night.

Friday i go to COPE.

And in 30 days, ‘Nilla will be here.

Life is good.

O, i almost forgot to tell you ~ Sir X gave me another gift.  Since i practiced successfully with the one rope noose thing-y, i get to keep that one, and i have something else to try.  i’ll tell you about it tomorrow…

Ooops

5 Sep

So when i posted Sir X and the Gift yesterday afternoon, it was purely accidental, i had meant to wait and post it today as my usual morning entry.  So now here i am…  i know, i could just skip a day, but that doesn’t feel right either.

At the moment, i seem to have lost interest in The Major.  i know, hard to believe, isn’t it?  But real life is just more exciting.

It is interesting to me that a couple of people have commented on how well The Major’s slut is doing in her training, compared to themselves.  Of course, it’s much easier for The Major’s slut, since she’s imaginary.

Which reminds me of a conversation i had with JM, the amazing analyst.  i was saying that The Major’s not real, that He’s a figment of my own imagination and lives only in my head.

JM just raised his eyebrows, the way he does sometimes.  “Are you sure about that?” he says. And before i can insist that yes, The Major is just a part of me, he says,

“After all, where do dreams happen?  Are they just in your head?”

Which made me stop and think, and I’m still not sure.

The Major absolutely has a life of His own, and when i write Him, it feels like “Him” directing it, at least some of the time.

So ok. Fine.

Right now, The Major is quiet, and that’s ok.

i’m seeing Sir X again today.  We’re going out for dinner tonight ~ with Ms. Constance and her slave Drew, actually, for Ms. Constance’s birthday.

But Sir X and i are getting together before that.  No, i don’t know what we’re doing.

He says it will be mix of vanilla and kink.  An afternoon of “fun and learning.”

i am intrigued.

i’m to bring an object for “show and tell,” something that i can slip in my purse.  It can be vanilla or kink, but the purpose is to generate discussion.

i don’t know what i’m taking, and am enjoying pondering my selection.

i don’t know what i’m going to wear either.  It’s only going up to 74 today, not 104, so i don’t think what i was going to wear will work.  🙁  Back to the drawing board.  Or closet.

In fact, i think i should go do that right now.  Wish me luck…

Gender

7 Aug

i went shopping yesterday, which turned out to be very exciting.  i found two dresses and two skirts ~ the dresses are the kind of casual elegance that i was looking for about this time last year and not finding.  They flatter my figure, making me look a bit slimmer than i am, so i was delighted.  The skirts are short and flippy and perfect for COPE, which is coming soon.

Last night i went out for dinner with Ms Constance, her slave Drew, and some other people from the community.  Went to the munch, and went to this bar, where i saw my first professional drag queen show.  Very different from the amateur benefit i went to last week, in some ways.

Watching people who are cross-dressing stirs some kind of odd feelings in me.  Whether it’s the professionals with their wigs and fancy outfits, or a couple of young female friends of mine, who have cut all their hair and dress to appear male, who practice gestures and mannerisms that are stereotypically male.

Gender bending.  They talk about sexual identity not being binary, that it’s on a continuum.  i have some trouble wrapping my mind around that idea.  i don’t know why.

For sure, i was raised with the idea of binary sexes.  You “are” either male or female, not something in between.   In fact, gender roles were pretty binary, back in the dark ages of the late 50’s and early 60’s.

You acted like a girl, or you acted like a boy, and while one could act like the opposite sex, it was seen as ~ wrong.  Against nature, really.

And really, i guess there are people who still think that way.  When i think about the toy store aisles ~ the rows of toys that are pink, and the rows that are brown and green, maybe blue, or bright primary colors.  Clearly, clearly the pink are girl toys and the rest are boy toys.

The scientific toys, the problem solving games ~ those are in the “boy toys” aisles.

Of course girls can play with them, and theoretically boys can play with the pink toys.  But they know at a very early age that they’re crossing the gender line.

There is a series of books for children – The Chronicles of Prydain ~ that i dearly love.  When my kids were little, the covers were white with multi-colored, fairly pastel, pictures.  When i went to buy them for my granddaughter, they’d changed the covers.  Now they’re dark colors, browns and greens.

i bought them for her, and when she opened them, of course she did the obligatory thank-you’s – she was maybe 5 at the time, and raised properly, of course, so she thanked me nicely.  And then she said, “But – why did you get me boy books?”

Sigh.

Not just boy toys, but boy books?

When i think about all that, i think that maybe my ideas about male/female are just as antiquated and wrong thinking as people who believe in girl toys and boy toys.

My friends who practice “gender bending” in its most interesting form shift from “male-presenting” to “female-presenting” and back again, apparently at whim.    A couple of them prefer that you not use male or female pronouns when referring to them, which makes talking about them a challenge.

It seems artificial to me, i don’t quite get it.  i think i am very much at the female end of the continuum, if there is one, and truly can’t imagine myself male.

But i have traits that are masculine, at least in the Jungian sense.  And i was raised with the idea, and totally believe, that i’m capable of everything that a man is, unless it requires physical strength.  And notice the way that idea is presented – the assumption that i am measured by and need to live up to the male standard.

When i think about these things, i’m grateful to my gender bending friends, and hope that they are pushing the pocket of what’s normal and accepted to the point that we’ll be more open to accepting the strength and beauty of everyone.

i had a client once who was a drag queen, lost her insurance in mid sex-change process, and was caught betwixt and between sexes.  She was an amazing person, and i learned so much from her.  And still i’m clueless to really understand how this all works.

You know, i was raised, as most of us are, with the idea of God as “He.”  My mother taught me that God was spirit, not male or female.  But all the images of God i knew were male.

The church i go to now includes feminine images of God in our worship, like the nun who recently came under scrutiny for writing about the feminine aspects of divinity.  Before i started going to church where i do,that wouldn’t have meant anything to me, i would have told you it didn’t matter if God was presented as male.

But the idea of God as our Father and Mother shocked me and opened me to ways of relating to God that i had never known before.  Allowed me to see God and connect spiritually in ways i had not known were possible.

So i’m watching the drag show last night, and all these thoughts are there, not clearly formulated, but just floating in my mind.    The show was beautiful and the performers are ~ powerful, i think, and poignant.  i watch the audience, fascinated by our fascination with the show.

And maybe that’s all i can really do ~ watch and learn.
